Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens
Presents Infant Squirrel Monkey
July 5, 2007 - Jacksonville, FL - The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens announced the birth of a squirrel monkey born July 3, 2007. It is estimated to be a healthy 100 grams and can be seen holding on under its mother’s belly or riding on her back in the squirrel monkey exhibit at Play Park.
“We are happy to report that mother and baby are doing well” said Craig Miller, curator of mammals at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. “This addition brings our squirrel monkey population total to nine. There is another female due to give birth any time now – so the family keeps growing,” he continued.
Squirrel monkeys have been at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens since January of 2004. They originally resided in the Range of the Jaguar until the opening of Play Park, where children can swing like monkeys on artificial vines in front of the exhibit. Squirrel monkeys are from the tropical forests of Central and South America. Mothers care exclusively for their young after a 150 to 170 day gestation period.
